Why census process should not be stopped for the sake of CAA

The process of halting census calculation is a saddening one.

The recent Citizenship amendment act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), National Population Register (NPR) sparkled confusions resulted in series of debates and protests-all over the country. Most importantly, the census process, which is scheduled to happen in mid-2020, after 2011, has been halted by the Governments of Kerala, West Bengal which is deeply worrying me. The census itself faced many obstacles while commencing the process, like requests to include the caste of the individuals in record etc. And now, CAA kindled even more confusions regarding the census, regarding the two processes — Census and NPR- while some are backing it, some are opposing it. So, this ‘messing around’ status of census 2020 must be revoked and I recommend that this process is very much essential as it is deeply connected with our lives. Here’s why

The election, which has been happening every five years generally, has its allotment of allotted representatives based on the demography of an area- which is indirectly connected to the census. Only with the help of census, the government will know the actual living population, to allow elective seats so they will collectively represent all classes of respective states of India.

The public awareness program must be conducted by eminent newspapers, public welfare groups to differentiate the concepts of Census, NPR, NRC. Now, the data we are having now were collected in 2011, which would be outdated now, as the medical facilities are improving, birth and mortality rate are increasing and decreasing respectively, which would lead to the change in overall demography of an area. So, the census data must be collected in order for a better future elections post 2020, of which, includes Tamil Nadu 2021 state assembly elections.
